Opposition MLAs Call on Feds to Oppose Passamaquoddy LNG Proposal
Fredericton — Eric Allaby, MLA for Fundy Isles, and Rick Doucet, MLA for Charlotte, have jointly written to the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, Prime Minister of Canada, to advise him that Quoddy Bay LLC has applied to the State of Maine for a lease for submerged land under Passamaquoddy Bay on which to construct a pier for a terminal to receive LNG.
"We issued this letter jointly to demonstrate the widespread opposition in Charlotte County to LNG in Passamaquoddy, and to ask the Prime Minister, now that an application has been made official by this filing, to dedicate the necessary and appropriate effort to serve our Canadian interests in opposing LNG in Passamaquoddy," said Allaby. "We want the Prime Minister to protect the Passamaquoddy Bay and all Canadian citizens and Canadian concerns in the Passamaquoddy area.
"I have been impressed by how all Charlotte County is working together to oppose LNG in Passamaquoddy," said Doucet. "We have all the mayors, ourselves as MLA’s, our MP, the Premier, Opposition Leader Shawn Graham, and federal Regional Minister Hon. Andy Scott, all saying no to LNG in Passamaquoddy. Now that it is official that Quoddy Bay LLC has filed an application, we want the Prime Minister to commit federal government effort to back up our united opposition to this project.
"I have also written to the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to ask if Quoddy Bay LLC has either filed an application or even pre-filed," said Allaby. "I have asked that we be informed if and when either a filing or pre-filing takes place."
A copy of the letter was sent to Hon. Andy Scott, asking for his continued support against LNG in Passamaquoddy, and asking that the necessary effort be made to ensure that this project can be successfully blocked.

Les députés de l’opposition demandent au gouvernement fédéral de s’opposer au projet de GNL dans la Baie de Passamaquoddy
Fredericton — Eric Allaby (LIB – Îles-de-Fundy) et Rick Doucet (LIB – Charlotte) ont écrit conjointement une lettre au premier ministre du Canada, Paul Martin, pour lui dire que les représentants de la compagnie Quoddy Bay LLC ont fait une demande de location à l’État du Maine afin d’obtenir des terres submergées sous la Baie de Passamaquoddy sur lesquelles ils aimeraient construire un quai avec un terminal capable de recevoir du gaz naturel liquéfié (GNL).
« Nous avons rédigé cette lettre ensemble pour démontrer à quel point l’opposition au projet de GNL est généralisée dans le Comté de Charlotte et pour demander au premier ministre, maintenant que la demande a été officiellement déposée, de faire le travail nécessaire et approprié pour défendre l’intérêt général du Canada en s’opposant au projet de GNL de Passamaquoddy », affirme M. Allaby. « Nous voulons que le premier ministre protège la Baie de Passamaquoddy ainsi que les citoyens canadiens qui habitent dans cette région.
« Cela m’impressionne beaucoup de voir que tous les habitants du Comté de Charlotte travaillent ensemble pour contrer la venue d’un terminal de GNL à Passamaquoddy », soutient M. Doucet. « Déjà tous les maires de la région, nous les députés provinciaux, notre député fédéral, le premier ministre provincial, le chef de l’opposition, Shawn Graham et le ministre fédéral pour notre région, Andy Scott ont dit non au projet de GNL à Passamaquoddy. Maintenant que Quoddy Bay LLC a déposé officiellement sa demande, nous voulons que le premier ministre du Canada s’engage à nous supporter dans notre lutte unifiée contre ce projet.
« Par ailleurs, j’ai aussi écrit une lettre à la Federal Energy Regulatory Commission des États-Unis pour leur demander si la compagnie Quoddy Bay LLC avait déposé une demande ou même s’elle avait entamé le processus de dépôt », indique M. Allaby. « J’ai demandé que nous soyons avertis si l’une ou l’autre de ces deux choses venait éventuellement à se produire. »
Une copie de la lettre a été envoyée à l’Hon. Andy Scott lui demandant qu’il continue de lutter contre le projet de GNL à Passamaquoddy et qu’il fasse les efforts nécessaires pour s’assurer que ce projet ne se réalise pas.
