New Brunswick, Canada

Proclamation

Passed Unanimously on 6 December 2004

NOTE: Grand Manan Village is a consolidation of all communities on the island of Grand Manan.

Grand Manan Village Council Proclamation

WHEREAS: the island of Grand Manan is situated in an environmentally sensitive area and the economy of Grand Manan is reliant upon the sustainability of this area; and

WHEREAS: our way of life is mainly dependent on fishing, aquaculture, and tourism; and

WHEREAS: Grand Manan faces ever-increasing transportation issues, and the economy and quality of life on Grand Manan are dependent on uninterrupted transportation services; and

WHEREAS: any project that negatively impacts our environment, our quality-of-life, our economy, or our ability to travel to and from our beautiful island, is unacceptable; and

WHEREAS: the possibility that the proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal will negatively impact our ability to fish the waters around Grand Manan, and thereby negatively affect our economy; and

WHEREAS: the possibility that the proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal will negatively impact our transportation services, and therefore negatively impact our quality-of-life and our economy; and

WHEREAS: the possibility that the proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal may negatively impact the sensitive environment around Grand Manan and the Passamaquoddy Bay, and therefore negatively impact our quality-of-life, our economy, and our tourism potential;

THEREFORE: let it be known that the Grand Manan Village Council opposes the construction of the proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal anywhere that the possibility of the above mentioned negative impacts may be felt on Grand Manan or in the surrounding area. The Council acknowledges that new industry must be allowed to develop and grow, but opposes any heavy industrialization that grows at the expense of our environment, our economy, and our sensitive way of life. The Grand Manan Village Council refuses to accept the dangers and risks associated with the LNG terminal and tankers.
